How It Works

FOIA and Public Records Processing

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests are a legal obligation with strict timelines. Backlogs are common, and the manual process of searching, reviewing, and redacting is labor-intensive.

Intake and triage. A skill classifies incoming requests by complexity (simple lookup, multi-department search, complex review) and routes to the appropriate workflow. It checks for duplicate or substantially similar requests and identifies the likely document custodians based on the request description.

Document retrieval. A skill orchestrates searches across document management systems, email archives, and departmental file shares. It applies date range filters, keyword matching, and custodian identification. The output is a structured inventory of responsive documents with provenance tracking — where each document was found and who the custodian is.

Redaction assistance. The most time-consuming FOIA step is line-by-line review for exempt information. A skill pre-processes documents to flag potential exemptions:

  • Personal privacy information (names, addresses, SSNs) → Exemption 6/7(C)

It provides application links and required documentation checklists — never makes eligibility determinations, just screens and informs.

Compliance Reporting

Key Principles for Government Deployments
