An MCP tool is a named capability that an MCP server publishes over the Model Context Protocol, such as reading recent orders or listing files. When you ask an assistant a question it cannot answer from its training, the assistant calls the tool that fits, and the tool returns live data from the connected system. The server hosts the tools, the client calls them, and the model decides which one a question needs. CorpusIQ connects your business systems to ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity through per-account authorization, and every answer carries a citation.

Three layers. The server is the process that hosts capabilities and speaks the protocol. The client is the application that calls them, such as ChatGPT or Claude. The tool is the capability itself, a named operation with a description and a schema of the inputs it accepts. The description matters more than the code: the model reads it to decide when the tool applies. One server usually publishes several tools, and the client can reach all of them over one connection.
A store owner asks an assistant how many orders the store took this week. The assistant cannot know from training, so it calls the order-lookup tool the store connected. The tool returns this week's orders from the live system, and the answer states the number with a link to the record it came from. Without the tool the assistant could only describe orders in general. With it, the answer is the store's own data, and the citation is the check.
A server is the kitchen, tools are the dishes on the menu, and the client is the customer who orders. The kitchen hosts the dishes, the menu says what each one takes, and the customer picks. The same split holds in MCP: the server hosts the tools, each tool declares its name and inputs, and the client decides, guided by the model, which tool answers the question. One kitchen, many dishes, one protocol.
Four checks. That the access is scoped per connected system instead of granted once. That the tools are read-only, or that any write-capable tool is clearly named before it is used. That answers carry citations to the records they came from, so a number can be verified before it is acted on. And that you can disconnect a system at any time and see when connections happened.
CorpusIQ connects 40+ business tools to ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity through per-account authorization, and every connection is read-only access. Ask a question in plain English and the assistant reads the systems you connected, then answers with figures that link back to the records they came from. The connected tools do not create campaigns, change bids or budgets, send email, or edit records in the systems you connect. Start with one question that matters and connect only the systems that hold the answer.
