Private AI is an AI setup where the assistant answers questions about your company without copying your records into a separate store. The assistant reads live from the systems you already use, such as QuickBooks, Shopify, Gmail, or Google Ads, and each figure it returns links back to the record it came from. CorpusIQ runs the retrieval side of that pattern across 40+ business tools, with per-account authorization and cited answers.
Related pillar: Private AI for business, in practice
Private describes three things, and none of them is the model. It describes where your data lives while the assistant works, which is in the systems you already run. It describes how the assistant reaches that data, which is a scoped authorization per connected system. And it describes what remains afterwards: bounded operational logs, plus whatever the AI client you asked from does with the conversation under its own plan and settings. A setup that is private on all three keeps your records where they are and reads them on demand.
The two get merged and they are different problems. A private model means the weights run on hardware you control. Private AI means the data path is controlled: who can read what, from where, and for how long. An open-weight model running on your own machine can still copy every record into a local index, which is not private in the sense that matters to a business. A hosted assistant can read every record in place and cite it, which is.
The usual question is where the model runs. The more useful question is where the records rest and what gets duplicated. A retrieval setup that reads on demand and returns a cited figure creates no second copy for you to secure, audit, and delete later. That is the leg you can actually inspect, and it is the one an evaluation should start with.
Six checks. Whether access is scoped per connected system instead of granted once. Whether the assistant reads on demand or copies records into a store. Whether each answer cites the record it came from, so a number can be checked before it is acted on. Whether connection and disconnection events are logged. Whether access can be revoked per system. And which AI provider's plan governs the conversation once the answer has been returned, since that leg sits outside the retrieval layer.
Businesses holding records they are accountable for: finance and accounting, legal, healthcare administration, human resources, and any team whose data carries a contractual or regulatory obligation. For those teams the deciding question is not how capable the assistant is. It is whether the records stay inside the systems that already govern them.
