Most people lose their first day to setup they did not need. They connect six tools, build a folder structure, and never ask a real question. The fastest path is the opposite: one source, one question about a number you can already verify by hand, one citation checked. That takes about twenty minutes and it tells you whether the thing works. Everything else is a second day problem.
Before you start: pick one number you already know
Choose a number you can verify without help. Last month's revenue. Open invoices. Cash on hand. Yesterday's orders. Ad spend for the week. Write it down before you connect anything.
That number is your test. If the answer comes back matching it, the connection is healthy and you can trust the next question. If it comes back different, you have found a mapping problem while the stakes are still zero, which is the cheapest possible moment to find it.
Step 1. Connect one tool
Go to the dashboard, open Connectors, and authorize the tool that holds your test number. Authorization is read-only and it is scoped to that tool. CorpusIQ does not ask for your password and it does not receive a copy of your data to hold.
One connector often covers several products. A single Google authorization covers Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Sheets, Analytics, Search Console and Ads. A single Meta authorization covers Facebook Pages, Instagram and Meta Ads. Authorize once per family, not once per product.
Start with the account that holds your real numbers, not a test account. 40+ connectors are available, and you only need one on day one.
Step 2. Ask about the number you wrote down
Open ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity and ask the narrowest version of your question: "What was my total revenue last month?" or "How much did I spend on Google Ads last week?" Name the source if you have several connected: "in QuickBooks, what did I pay in contractor expenses last month?"
Expect a number, a short explanation of how it was computed, and a source link. If the assistant asks a clarifying question, answer it in one line and let it re-run. That back and forth is normal on a first question and it gets shorter as your sources settle.
The assistant picks the matching skill from 150+ pre-built ones automatically. You do not choose a skill or write a query.
Step 3. Open the citation and compare
Click the source link. You are checking three things: that the source is the system you expected, that the period matches what you asked for, and that the figure lines up with the number you wrote down.
If all three match, you are done with validation. If two of three match, say so in the conversation and ask it to reconcile: "your total says 41,200 but the invoice list shows 38,900, which is right?" A correct answer explains the gap. A vague answer means the mapping needs a look before you rely on it.
Never accept a figure you have not opened the source for, and never accept one you could not defend to a bookkeeper.
Step 4. Add a second source and ask across both
This is the step where the product stops being a reader and starts being useful. Connect the second tool that holds the other half of a question you actually have.
Good second questions read like this: "Does my Google Ads spend this month line up with the revenue Shopify attributes to paid traffic?" or "Which customers have open invoices and also an open support thread?" One source answers a lookup. Two sources answer a decision.
What to skip on day one
- →Connecting everything. Each unused connection is a place a mapping error can hide. Add tools as questions demand them.
- →Building a dashboard. Ask the question first. If you ask it three weeks in a row, that is when it deserves a saved view.
- →Inviting the team. Get one person through steps one to four before you widen access.
- →Asking a strategy question first. Broad questions return broad answers and you cannot verify broad answers.
Common questions
How long does the first day actually take?
About twenty minutes to connect one tool, ask a question, and check the citation. Add ten minutes for each additional tool. The part that takes longer is deciding what your recurring questions are, and that is worth doing on paper away from the screen.
Do I need to connect my accounting system first?
It is the most common starting point because it holds the numbers most owners verify first: revenue, expenses, open invoices, cash. If your operational question is about orders or ads, start there instead. The order does not matter as long as you start with one tool and one verifiable number.
Does CorpusIQ store the data it reads?
Direct MCP does not retain raw customer files or full connector response payloads. Operational logs may persist for up to 30 days. CorpusIQ does not train models on customer data. The selected AI client's plan and settings govern how the conversation itself is handled.
What if the first answer is wrong?
Say what you expected and what you see. Most first-day mismatches come from three causes: the wrong period (calendar month versus fiscal month), the wrong account when several are authorized, or a filter the assistant did not know about. Each is fixed by naming it once in the conversation. Nothing about the connection needs to change.
Which assistants can I use?
ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity. The connector and skill layer is the same across all three, so setup done in one place carries over to the others.
