MCP for Procurement: Connect Vendor, Spend, and Contract Data to AI¶
Procurement answers the hardest join in the business. What we spend, with whom, under what terms, and how they perform, lives in four different places and rarely in the same format. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity query those sources together in plain English, read-only, with every number cited back to the system it came from.
The question every procurement team is asked¶
"What do we spend with this vendor, and are we getting what we agreed?" That single question needs the invoice history, the contract, the service record, and the buying entity.
Without MCP it becomes a week of email. With MCP it is one prompt:
- "What is our total spend with this vendor over the last three years, by entity?"
- "Which suppliers have more than one business unit buying from them separately?"
- "What did we agree on pricing, and what have we actually been billed?"
- "Which contracts are coming up for renewal in the next two quarters?"
Spend visibility and consolidation¶
- "Rank our top 30 suppliers by annual spend, and show the trend for each."
- "Which categories are being bought from more than ten suppliers?"
- "Where are we buying the same item at materially different prices?"
- "Which spend is going through a supplier we have no contract with?"
The fragmented-supplier question finds money. It is also the one nobody can answer from a single system.
Vendor performance¶
- "Which suppliers have the highest rate of late deliveries this year?"
- "How does defect or return rate compare across suppliers for the same component?"
- "Which suppliers have open disputes or unresolved credits?"
- "What is our average resolution time on supplier issues?"
Where quality, delivery, and finance data are connected, supplier scorecards become a query rather than a quarterly project.
Contracts, terms, and exposure¶
- "Which vendors have a termination-for-convenience clause, and what notice does it require?"
- "Which suppliers are single-source for a component we cannot do without?"
- "Which contracts contain a price escalation clause, and when does each next trigger?"
- "Which agreements are missing a signed copy in our system of record?"
Renewal and notice windows¶
- "List every agreement renewing in the next 90 days, with the notice period and the current annual value."
- "Which renewals have no owner assigned?"
- "What is the total value of contracts up for renewal this quarter?"
How CorpusIQ fits¶
CorpusIQ is the connector layer between the systems you already run and the AI assistant your team already uses. Retrieval is read-only and cited.
- Vendor records and registers. Connect Airtable or a supported database for supplier registers, scorecards, and exception logs.
- Finance and invoices. Connect QuickBooks for bills, payments, and vendor spend history.
- Contracts and terms. Connect Google Drive or OneDrive for the agreements themselves, and search the email thread where terms were negotiated.
- Documents and specifications. Connect Notion or a file store for specifications and statements of work.
- Operations systems. Connect Odoo for purchase orders alongside inventory and finance.
- Communication. Connect Slack or email for issue history and escalations.
Frequently Asked Questions¶
Can the assistant approve a purchase order?
No. The retrieval tools documented here are marked read-only and provide no execution capability. The assistant can read and cite vendor, contract, and spend data, but approvals stay in your own systems. How do we join invoices to contracts?
By connecting both and asking one question. "What did we actually pay against this agreement, and where does it differ from the contract terms?" is assembled from the finance system and the document store together. Is supplier pricing visible to everyone?
Access follows the credentials each user connects. A user only sees what their own authorised accounts can already see. Your systems remain the source of record. What if our spend data is in a system with no connector?
If it exposes PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL, MongoDB, or Cosmos DB, the database bridge reads it with SQL. For API-only systems, CorpusIQ builds custom connectors.Where is the fastest win?
The renewal calendar. Knowing what auto-renews in the next 90 days, with the notice period and the annual value, is the question that prevents the expensive mistake.Internal Links¶
